I do not watch “Grey’s Anatomy,” but I realize that so many people do. A friend directed me to this interesting article which is a feminist critique of the show. Despite my ignorance of the show, the author’s comments are persuasive. Comments, Grey’s fans?

I am quite the Grey’s Anatomy fan, though I was sorely disappointed with last week’s two hour episode and the spin-off show. In fact, every Grey’s fan I’ve talked to was disappointed with the episode and felt ripped off by the sneak peak preview for the spin-off show featuring the character of Addison.
As a feminist I find myself struggling with some of the very issues that the author mentions regarding Grey’s and another favorite of mine, Sex and the City. As of late I have been grappling with what it means to find and use my voice, innately female, in the “man’s” world of academia and parish ministry. Echoing the critique of Grey’s Anatomy I wonder why it is that a woman cannot be portrayed as one who has it all together: relationships, career, sexually, and in a family setting. It seems that chaos must inevitably exist in one of these four categories in order for a female character to be likable. If she has it all together, she typically portrayed as too aggressive or bitchy.
Perhaps I am merely projecting my own personal quandaries onto the sitcoms that captivate much of pop culture. I am not sure, but I am certain that an authentically female voice still struggles to be heard.
